1. Mental backing: The base.
Various circumstances lead to my decision for a long journey to see more and broaden my mind. Due to many interesting trips through Europe as a child with my parents, I had an early desire to travel. Camping holidays in Spain, Andorra, France, Italy, Croatia, etc. followed. The idea for a world tour came in May and June 2010 - in May the first desire and immediately after graduation (a few minutes after the oral defense) the firm decision to go through with it. In less than three months, I published my dissertation as a book, quit my apartment, put the remaining household to my parents, reorganized contracts / insurances etc. and started with the travel arrangements like office-reorganization, first vaccinations and visas. I bought the necessary travel-equipment in less than three weeks - the most just a week before departure with my brother in Europe’s biggest outdoor shop in Cologne. Stressful? In any case!
For the support during and after the travel arrangements I would like to warmly thank many very good friends and especially my parents. As I mentioned in my doctoral degree speech: The best parents you could ever want!

zunächst herzlichen Glückwunsch zu Deinem heutigen Geburtstag und die Einladung
zu der zünftigen Feier.
Wir wünschen Dir, wenn wir auch leider verhindert sind, einen schönen Verlauf
Deines Ehrentages und vor allem ein glückliches, gesundes und ereignisreiches
neues Lebensjahr mit vielen interessanten Eindrücken und Begegnungen.
Du bist ja auf gutem Wege zu einem gefragten Reiseschriftsteller. Wir freuen uns
über Deine interessanten Berichte und danken auch für Deine Karte aus Dhaka, die
